The PAR Lab is committed to open, transparent, reflexive, ethical, and rigorous science. Consistent with a post-positivist approach, we recognize that observations are prone to error. We strive to reduce error through thoughtful study design, transparency, appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods, reflexivity, triangulation, peer review, open science practices, and continual refinement in light of compelling new evidence. We also recognize that current academic incentive structures often reward novelty and publication volume over careful, cumulative science. For this reason, we value quality, reflection, and methodological rigor over rapid output, believing that research should prioritize accuracy, integrity, and meaningful contribution over speed.
We also recognize that scientific inquiry is one valuable way of knowing, but not the only one. Guided by Mi’kmaq Elder Albert Marshall’s concept of Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk), we are learning how to incorporate Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing alongside the strengths of Western scientific approaches. This orientation encourages us to think critically about whose knowledge is recognized where, whose voices are represented, and who ultimately benefits from the questions we ask and the knowledge we produce. It also means recognizing that research is never entirely separate from the social and historical contexts in which it occurs.
