PAR Lab Values
Scientific Approach
- Open, transparent, and rigorous science
- Post-positivist and critical realist approaches
- Quality and reflection over rapid output
- Free peer-reviewed knowledge (free to publish and read)
Open, transparent, and rigorous science is not about achieving absolute perfection. Consistent with a post-positivist approach, we recognize that all observations are inherently imperfect and prone to error. We strive to reduce error through thoughtful study design, transparency, appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods, reflexivity, triangulation, peer review, open science practices, and continual refinement in light of new evidence. We also recognize that current academic incentive structures often reward novelty and publication volume over careful, cumulative science. For this reason, we value quality, reflection, and methodological rigor over rapid output, believing that research should prioritize accuracy, integrity, and meaningful contribution over speed.
We also recognize that scientific inquiry is one valuable way of knowing, but not the only one. Guided by Elder Albert Marshall’s concept of Two-Eyed Seeing, we seek to integrate strengths from multiple knowledge systems, including indigenous knowledge systems, while maintaining a commitment to rigorous, transparent, and ethical research that ultimately serves social justice and equity.
